Documenting permit delays across New Jersey.
How it works
Three steps. Your experience becomes part of a documented record.
Share your experience
A short form: your municipality, the type of permit, and when you applied. Reasonable estimates are acceptable if you don’t remember exact dates.
Reports are documented
Your submission is combined with others from the same municipality, showing where applicants are facing unreasonable delays or unnecessary administrative obstacles.
Shared for federal review
The Department of Justice has opened an investigation into allegedly unconstitutional permit delays in Pennsauken Township, NJ, and announced similar investigations in other states. Submissions may be shared with DOJ contacts to help identify where else residents may be affected.
Before you start
Nothing special required. These tips make your report stronger.
Find your dates
Search your email inbox for messages from [email protected]. New Jersey’s firearms application system typically sends confirmation and approval emails that establish when your application was submitted and processed. Can’t find them? Your best estimate is fine.
What you’ll be asked
- The municipality and police department where you applied
- Permit type: firearms ID card, purchase permit, or carry permit
- Submission date and current status (approved, pending, or denied)
- Optional uploads: submission confirmations, approval notices, or police correspondence
How your report is handled
Reports are not published or posted publicly. They may be shared with Department of Justice Civil Rights Division contacts reviewing New Jersey permitting delays. Please do not include Social Security numbers, firearms ID numbers, or other unnecessary sensitive personal information.
Why we started this
We're New Jersey residents who experienced long delays getting firearms permits in our own communities. After seeing how many others were dealing with the same problem, we reached out to the U.S. Department of Justice and connected with attorneys who were interested in hearing about these experiences.
We started this effort to help people across New Jersey document their permit delays and make sure their experiences can be brought to the attention of those reviewing these issues. We're doing this voluntarily, on our own time, because we believe these delays deserve attention. Nobody is making money from this.
